Dual foreign nationalities and multiple visas

I have British and Australian citizenship. First time I worked in Japan I had my visa attached to my British passport. If I was applying for a student visa a few years later, should I do it on my British passport again, even though I’m applying from Australia? I just have a vague recollection of hearing that Jabanese bureauracy can have issues with dual nationals, but can’t remember if that was just people where one of the nationalities was Japanese. As I type this I’m thinking it’ll likely cause less friction just to use my British but I’m open to advice, cheers.

edit: both passports have been renewed since I was last in Japan if that makes any difference

  1. Japanese embassies and consulates will usually only provide services for local residents of the countries they’re in. As your British passport won’t have any visas or anything in it showing that you’re living in Australia legally it would probably be best to use your Australian passport for your application.

  2. ‘The Nationality act’ only applies to those holding Japanese nationality.

‘The immigration control and refugee act’ applies to those who don’t hold Japanese nationality (apart from maybe Special Permanent Residents?… I think they have their own law?)

Thus if you don’t hold Japanese nationality you can hold as many nationalities as you like (obviously depending on the laws of each nationality because not all countries allow dual nationality too).

Just make sure which ever passport you use for your visa is the one you use for the whole duration of that period of stay.
