Bread maker advice for my wife’s birthday, should I buy Panasonic SD-MT3-W or Iris Ohyama IBM-020-B? She’s never had one before but likes baking.

It’s only really for a hobby. Is there that big a difference between the 2?

Also happy to take recommendations for machines from people who know about this stuff!

Thanks

  1. I am not into baking (beyond basic cakes and muffins) but we LOVE our panasonic bread maker (whatever the basic model on amazon is). I get supplies from Tomiz (i recommend japanese flour, mixing wholeweat and white and good quality butter) and make bread about three times a week plus pizza bases on weekends. Occasionally make a simple pound cake in there too.

It’s basically foolproof and tastes a million times better than japanese super market bread (i still sometimes buy sourdought or baguettes from nicer bakeries).

The great thing is how versatile it is, you can throw herbs into your pizza dough, seeds into your bread, use oil or butter, add milk powder or don’t, use less sugar/honey/syrup etc. & the timer function means you can wake to the smell of warm toasty bread. Have fun!

  2. Panasonic model is out of production and smaller bake area. Iris one is about 100W higher rating, which means it probably heats a bit better. Since the price of it is not so bad, I’d say go for that one.

In general all these bread making machines are very similar. The kneading thing at the bottom, metal form which is surrounded by heater coils for the actual baking. As long as it’s a domestic model specifically for 100V, pretty much any of them will be OK.

  3. I’ve used Panasonic SD-BMT1001 for six years or so and have no complaints. So for me, +1 for Panasonic just from my limited experience.
