Tutor Recommendation

After doing WaniKani and light grammar work for about a year now, I think I am going to start reading and working with a tutor once every week or two weeks. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for online tutors? There are so many on iTalki that look great and just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with some of them that they could recommend. Tutors can be of any price range and can be independent from iTalki, I’m willing to explore! Please let me know!

  1. With iTalki, you can see ratings, and I think you can see return students? Which is important. Finding a tutor is sorta like trying to find a new friend I have found. I had two tutors I found on my own, before I knew about iTalki, and they were not a great fit. One was sort of just a college student, the other took too many students and it affected her work. I finally just joined a language learning center with a small class size 2-3, and have been doing that ever since, maybe almost 3 years now. It works, the lady is nice, acts like a teacher with her stuff together, lesson plan, reliable and all that. Long winded way of saying you just have to put yourself out there and see what works.

  2. I go through [Asao Language School](https://www.asaolanguage.net/) for online lessons and am happy with them. I actually use two different tutors from their school for variety.

Edit for more detail: I’ve been using them for a year and a half, two lessons a week. I do half-grammar, half-conversation with one tutor, and just conversation practice with the other. Cost of lessons is Â¥2,450 for one hour, billed through Square. I requested to be billed for ten lessons at a time, not sure what the standard situation is there. It’s a real job for the tutors, not just a side gig, so it’s reliable. When a tutor will miss a lesson (which has happened once) they bring in a replacement.

  3. Cosimo Caputo on italki is fantastic. He can really teach and adapt methods that are student specific. He has done this with both Japanese and Mandarin. One of the best tutors for me ever.
