I just had my first ever Japanese conversation! うれしい ♡

I was playing Genshin Impact yesterday in the Asia server, and my world was out of fish. After getting rejected dozens of times, I finally got to join a random player’s world to beg for fish. There were two other players in it chatting to each other in Japanese. I asked if I could fish in romaji since I forgot to install the JP keyboard (tsuri ni itte mo ii desuka) and they said yes. They even accompanied me, unlocked the boat just for me, and cleared out the enemies near the fishing spot, and gave me ALL the fish in it! They were so nice!

I notice they were talking very casually with each other and asked if they know each other (o shiriai desuka). They said they were shinyuu. We ended up chatting for over 2 hours! The entire conversation was in Japanese. I told them I’m self studying Japanese, and I had no Japanese friends, so I was so happy I got to talk to them. They told me it was fun playing with me and we should play again with each other next time.

I also asked them if it’s 読みにくい romaji, since they commented that hiragana is so long to read, and they said it kinda is since they have to convert each syllable to hiragana one by one in their brain, but it is fine since all it does is take a bit more time and it’s daijoubou yo :D.
Anyway next time I’ll make sure to install the Japanese keyboard, I know how, I just forgot to do it for this laptop. I asked what they wanted to do after I stole all their fish (shitai koto ga aru).

After this we went to battle a few more bosses and made jokes about some of the moves along the way, like my character’s stone stele they keep calling a 鐘 w. One of them got an ultra rare 5 hoshi artifact so I celebrated with them with omedetou. I thanked them for being nice to me, and they thanked me for coming to their world too. We all added each other to our friends list. They’re my first friends in Genshin Impact too!! It felt amazing but I had to sleep since it was 1am already. They both told me tanoshkatta and mata asobou 😀

I know my Japanese is unnatural and strange, but they still understood everything I asked. I never knew I was capable of communicating, since I self study on my own just to read manga and play video games, I have never tried to talk to anyone. It was so fun!! Just wanted to share. 🙂

  1. Sounds like a great interaction. And probably everyone is rejecting you because the new character Cyno requires farming of some horribly difficult to find beetles that are locked behind story quests.
