Japanese Pension

So I moved to Japan from America on a Spousal VISA in February of this year, I have read a few places that under an income amount then I would be exempt from paying the pension, but the thing is that I would like to get permanent residency someday and I read that it is recommended to pay into the pension to get the permanent residency faster. The thing is I never got a letter for the pension with the bills for it, but I did get the insurance bill letters. Did I miss the letter? Would this be bad for my goal to get permanent residency? Should I go to my city hall and talk with someone about this? Or do I start paying after a certain time frame? Also, my salary is 3,000,000 yen a year.

Thanks for the help!

  1. if you are working with a salary the company should put you on the scheme.

    Insurance/pension are usually linked.
Yes. It will greatly hurt your chances to get the residency.

  2. At 3m yen you’re well above the salary limit to be a dependent. Your company should be handling pension and insurance for you. Ask your HR. You can talk to the city office to see if there’s anything you had to pay but missed.

Also paying pension/insurance if you are required to – i.e., following the law – is the *bare minimum* required to get PR. It doesn’t get you PR faster. Not paying the pension/insurance tanks your chances at PR.
