Getting a child of a Japanese national visa after getting a working visa?

My dad is a Japanese national, I’m currently moving to japan on a working visa because of jet. I was wondering once it expired would I theoretically be able to go for a child of a Japanese national visa once this visa expires or would it be easier to continue using a working visa until I could get permanent residency?

  1. FYI, I maybe incorrect but I don’t think you can get a child of a Japanese national SOR, because they may only be for children I.e <20 years old. Also I believe you actually need to be living with the Japanese parent in the same juminhyo. However, you should be able to get the ‘Long-term resident’ SOR though.

I wouldn’t wait for your shitty heavily restricted, looks bad on a non-ALT Job application ‘instructor’ SOR to expire.

Once you’re in the country, and at your assigned location, then switch over onto the LTR SOR straight away. It’s unlikely the BoE you work for with JET will care on the account of it actually makes their life easier because the LTR is table 2 and self sponsored, so means less work for them to provide you renew documents etc

However, As per JET’s contractual T&Cs you’re not allowed to work other jobs, and also as per Article 38 of the ‘local public servant act’ you’re not allowed to work additional jobs (without BoE permission) BUT with the LTR SOR you can find a job, quit JET and then not have to worry about changing your SOR for said new job. The LTR on your CV/Resume will look a lot better than Instructor, because then potential employers know you won’t have change in SOR issues on the LTR.

Edit: Also LTRs can get PR after 5 years. Work visa route is 10 years….
