I’m traveling to the states soon for about 10 days. I won’t be using any mobile data, instead just relying on whatever wifi is available at where i’ll be. But what if I bring my pocket wifi from AU? Does that work in the states? probably not but I wanted to check just in case.

It would need to use a cellular network in the US to get Internet access, assuming it can do international roaming, in which case the roaming charges could be extremely expensive.
Leave it at home, even if it did work it would be expensive.
You could just buy a US sim and use that for data while you’re there. TMobile has cheapish options.
If your phone can’t handle 2 sims, take an old one and use the US sim in there as a hotspot
