Iron infusions for severe anemia?

My most recent blood test came back with an iron level of 23 and ferritin level of 3. so i am severely anemic

I think treatment back home would be an iron infusion, but I can’t find anything about that in Japan except vitamin C IVs.

I bought nature made 6mg iron supplements but I think I need a higher dose

Edit: brain broken, If anyone has gotten an infusion in Tokyo please let me know how. Thanks!

  1. Hello there,

I also have pretty severe iron deficiency anemia for > 10 years.

(* insert usual disclaimer of: this is not medical advice go talk to a doctor)

This is a good daily supplement that is available without script – 3x daily is standard and this is a much more robust supplement than a 6mg nature made tablet:

This is heme-iron which is much easier for the body to absorb than plant based iron that is in most supplements, especially if the root of your iron issues would happen to be GI related (Crohn’s, Colitis etc). If you are unsure of the root cause, it may be worth consulting a GI specialist to investigate that angle as its a common complication.

Iron infusions are a possible treatment when you are that low, but I have not needed one while living in Japan, so I don’t have any ready recommendations. I would ask your doctor about it. Probably anywhere that does IV infusions could do it if ordered by a doc. You probably don’t see it advertised a la carte like Vit C, etc, because its not one you’d want to let a patient self prescribe as overdosing on iron can be dangerous.

  2. I went to a clinic and the doctor gave 50mg pills for two months, but the clinic changed in the meantime so new doctor, different stuff etc… now i’m buying vitamin with 18mg iron at normal drug store (seims), will check blood level only in november…. let’s see how it’s going
