Need to ship my PC to Japan.. how do?

I’ve been approved to be an ALT in Yuzawa for a year, and intend to be working remotely, as well to supplement my income.

Before anyone says “don’t bring it, just buy/build one there,” please don’t. I want to bring my PC, and intend to. The cost isn’t too much an issue. I just want to take it there (and back, next year) safely and, ideally, undamaged. Who can I trust to do this reliably? I’ve looked up other posts on Reddit but they’re all 2+ years old, and I’m hoping for some more up-to-date information.

Thanks!

  1. Take it apart, package the parts for shipping, ship it fedex or whatever you like, reassemble on arrival.

  2. I personally just brought mine in my check on and carry on bags. Brought my case which was huge. Everone does something different. I considered shipping too but perfered to keep it as close as possible to me.

  3. I moved to Japan and – like the other poster – checked my PC into a suitcase with various other things and put it under the plane. Just pack it with some blankets and pillows. The $50 you’ll pay for an extra suitcase is cheaper than you’ll find anywhere for shipping.

  4. Is it fragile?

Make sure that you put lots of signs on it that say “FRAGILE!”. Customs & Excise sometimes drop fragile gear when they’re checking to make sure that dangerous drugs that are dangerous are not hidden inside it. I mean, they’ll drop it anyway, but at least they’ll know that it’s probably broken.

Make sure that you insure it, for when Customs & Excise drop it.

  5. I checked my computer in when I flew over. The price for an additional cheap suitcase and one additional item is not that much different than sending it via any shipping service, but there are WAY less points where your stuff gets thrown around. At least that was my reason for doing it.
You can also disassemble, put the parts between your clothes and reassemble in Japan.
