Ceiling light recommendations?

I recently moved and, for the first time since…ever, I have to buy some ceiling lights.

What are some good brands? What are some things that I should take notes/be careful about?

Will it be difficult to put them by myself? It doesn’t look too hard. There’s an outlet with places to screw the light “down”, but I will have to use a stepladder.

Would it be better to buy something online or go to a store and pick it out?

I don’t really have anyone I can ask in person since everyone I know lives in company housing or with their parents.

  1. I’d go to a home centre. There they usually have a bunch of ceiling lights, you can see them in action and play with their remote controls and get a feel for the right size. Make sure, it’s an LED light. Otherwise, just buy what you like. They’re all about the same.

A stepladder would be comfy, but a chair is usually enough. Mounting the light is usually easy, and the lights come with instructions. Normally, you should be able to just click the new light in, no tools needed. But it can happen that you need a basic set of tools, or a Swiss-Army-Knife to make it happen.

  2. >Will it be difficult to put them ^{ceiling ^lights} by myself? … will have to use a stepladder?

    1. “Stepladder”?—No ladder is needed…just use your dining table as a scaffold.

    2. If you don’t want to install the ceiling lights yourself, somewhere near your local train station will be an *denkiya*/electrical goods store from which you can purchase lights and have them install your purchases at a very competitive price {less than ¥8,000 for installation in the Kanto region, check google}. It may seem strange, but these little local electrical goods stores are not that more expensive than big stores or the internet, and offer fast/easy installation with great service. A cute gaijin girl can wheedle huge discounts with just a smile. 😉

    >What are some good…?

For ceiling lights, you want LED lights {not florescent} since LEDs use 80~90% LESS electricity than florescent lights.

    >What are some good brands?

Stick to the major brands of LED lights: Panasonic, Toshiba, Hitachi, Sharp or Philips. The discount brands often don’t last.
