About to graduate with a Ph.D in English, and want to teach at a Japanese university.

\*Crossposting after recommendations.

Good evening all,

I’d love to teach English literature at a Japanese university. I’m extraordinarily interested in Japan, and love Japanese culture for all of its positives and “negatives.” I enjoy Japanese animation and manga, but I’m more fascinated by Japanese history, architecture, and culture more than its popular culture. My literature concentration is in Caribbean literature in English. Besides my skill as an educator, I know Spanish and English, and am currently learning a lot about business studies as part of my current employments. I have checked websites to teach in Japan, but most opportunities are in schools, and I would prefer an opportunity to teach at a university. While I cannot speak fluent Japanese, I feel that I could learn quickly if I were there. What do you all recommend that I do?

Please, feel free to ask more personal questions over direct messages.

  1. Maybe JET, get some experience in high school and then look for university openings

  2. JREC is the search engine for academic jobs in Universities. Alternatively you could look on Indeed. I recommend you don’t get your hopes up, teaching at the university level in Japan is a better paying but still limited in terms of salary(low)/advancement(none)/tenure(you’ll be limited to 4 1 year contracts).

  3. My hope with the post was to find someone at Japan, who knew the right people, who could tell their network, “hey, this guy seems cool. Let’s try to get him here.” Haha. So, if you know the right person, please let them know!
