No fixed residency for beginning of Working Holiday Visa

I’m finding mixed info on whether it is necessary to register a fixed residence within 14 days of arrival to Japan vs. within 14 days of acquiring fixed residence.

Am I correct in understanding that with a Working Holiday Visa, I don’t have to register a place of residence within 14 days of arrival if I am just staying in hostels/inns/hotels? It’s only once I get a residential place to stay?

I was planning to travel around for the first month or two before deciding where to stay as residence and look for work. I’m really hoping that it’s alright to delay registering residence until I’ve actually settled on a place.

Thanks!

  1. The way the regulation is written makes it clear that you are required to register your address when you get a permanent residential address.

    ***BUT…***

You *are* required to register an address. The flex time is there to account for the fact that you generally can’t rent an apartment remotely in Japan. So they give you a bit of time for searching end doing paperwork.

It is *not* intended to allow people to bounce from hotel to hostel to airbnb without registering. Failing to register an address within a reasonable time after arriving can have some pretty dire consequences, up to and including getting your status of residence revoked and getting deported.

  2. You have to. I registered the airbnb I was in, then when I moved into my own apartment, went that same day to change it.

That’s what you have to do.
