Tokyo or somewhere else?

Hi everyone, i’ve been thinking to move to japan for studying japanese and after that looking for work.

A little bit of my background.
I’m from southeast asia. I did UI UX Design and general Graphic design, and i’m currently learning to be a front-end developers by taking online classes. I have 4+ years experience on design industry and after some saving i quit my job because reasons.. and now want to start new career as a front end devs with design skills.

Been reading that tokyo is great to meet people and build connection, but i kinda don’t want to live in tokyo while studying japanese, i want somewhere that near tokyo but on a cheaper side, don’t want to blow up my savings while studying. So preferably somewhere cheaper but still convenient to live.

Chiba/yokohama is close to tokyo but i don’t have that many info on this to make decision.

Or if you guys have any other ideas feel free to drop it here.
Thank you.

  1. Ever thought about the Kansai area ? Not to say that is necessarly that much cheaper than Tokyo but it’s still great. Have a look at Kyoto, that’s where I went

  2. If you want to do sightseeing in areas like Kyoto, Osaka or Nara, Tokyo is a bit far.

I studied in Okazaki (near Nagoya), and Kyoto was a fairly easy day trip.

I’ve been to the Yamasa Institute several times, and would go again. They have their own housing so housing. The school is a short walk or bike ride, instead of a crowded, time-consuming train ride that also costs money.

The last time I was there, they had office staff who could speak English, Chinese and Vietnamese.

  3. Try Yamanashi. Close enough but feels far and quiet. Rural and affordable too.

  4. I’d always recommend that anyone moving to Japan live in Tokyo at least once.

That said, Yokohama and Chiba are essentially just Tokyo as well.

  5. Yokohama is as expensive as Tokyo, chiba is cheaper but maybe I little far from Tokyo, take a look to Saitama, I think you can find a faster connection to Tokyo.

  6. I live in Okinawa, and i love it, but it’s hardly what one would call “convenient”, given its location and subpar public transportation (outside of Naha/Urasoe). How about Sendai? I studied in Tohoku University, and Sendai is a great city. Not overwhelmingly large like Tokyo or Osaka, but it’s still large, so you’ll find everything you need. Transportation in the city is good, and it’s not too far from Tokyo by plane or shinkansen. The food is also great there, nice people, but it can get a little cold in the winter (not brutal like Akita, Aomori, or Hokkaido, though).

  7. Fukuoka is a convenient alternative for your student life. It’s not near Tokyo but it’s big enough, compact, has a beach in the city and is really convenient. Also much more economical than living in tokyo and friendlier more laid back people in general.
