Study (part time/remote Ph.D) under work visa?

So over the past several years, my company has been sending some of its employees (japanese) to a certain university (a pretty high ranked uni) to do PhD with a certain professor.
The PhD is mainly focused on simulations and calculations so it is mainly remote and part time, with the job being full time.
Now, they’re trying to do the same with me (foreigner).
Since i am here with a working visa, is it actually possible to do this without limiting my work time to 28h/week?

For some extra note, since the PhD is part time, it usually takes the employees around 6 years to finish, and my working visa is a 5 year visa (Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services), issued dec 2020.

Any insight will be appreciated.

Thank you

  1. I’m in the same position as you, with the difference is that I’m full time PhD student.

Not sure about part-time, but as a foreigner, if you are going to an academic institution you *have* to have student visa.
