Ehime Prefecture or Noto Peninsula?

Hi everyone!

My friends and I are planning to go to Japan next June for 21 days. We would like to stay at 4 different places. We’re thinking of going to Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto. As for the 4th place, we’re hesitating: somewhere in the Noto Peninsula (Wajima, Noto, Nanao, etc.) or in the Ehime prefecture (Matsuyama, Uwajima, Uchiko, etc.). Since we’re doing 3 big cities, we want something less “city” and more “countryside”. We would like to have a cultural + nature combo in the 4th place.

Which one do you recommend the most? Thanks a lot!

Edit: We can’t rent a car and also, we would like a place near the beach so that’s why we’re hesitating between these two especially.

Takayama probably fit this description better.

  2. The Noto peninsula is very difficult without a car so it depends on if you would rent a car or not

  3. Kagawa prefecture (Takamatsu, Art Islands, Kotohira, Zentsuji, Marugame) , Echigo part of Niigata prefecture and Shimane prefecture (Matsue, Izumo, Adachi Museum of Art) would probably be the somewhat rural places that beat describe blending of culture (triennales, art museums) and nature with stunning vistas.

Considering June is a rainy season, you would need car rental for Noto Peninsula (which you would not do) and there is typically fair likelihood of extreme weather warnings for rural Ehime (flash floods and landslides), I would probably give Kagawa a try.

Also note that Ehime is likely to require conversational Japanese if you stay overnight outside Matsuyama.
