Long term issues with non-Japanese phones?

I’m in need of a Japanese phone number, and want to keep my US number. I have a dual-SIM Galaxy device from the US, factory unlocked. I’ve read the wiki and was also told by a rep in store about the Giteki mark requirement. I understand I can go through an MVNO online where they cannot check, but I am hesitant to do so. Just curious if anybody who has been using a non-Japanese phone (no Giteki certification) for a while (several years or more) has had any problems with the operator inquiring or discovering the lack of Giteki? Since the MVNO would know my IMEI, I would think it would be trivial to check if the phone is a Japan variant or not, and I don’t even know if there is a variant with Giteki. I plan to stay in Japan long term, and I’m with an amazing company now, so I’m hesitant to do something I know is illegal, even if initial enforcement is lacking. My other option is to get a cheap second phone and carry them both, but that is not ideal. I also don’t want to spend $1000+ on getting the Japanese variant of my current phone, which still would not let me have two SIMs in one phone since only the US version has dual SIM.

So a few questions: has anybody long term had their non-Giteki phone get flagged, and is it even possible to tell if a phone has Giteki without physically having the phone in hand and checking settings/certification page?
