Speeding cameras on Tomei highway working?

Was on autopilot as I was going into Tokyo today. I knew there are speeding cameras but I was behind a van and just keeping the same speed as they were. Then I realized it’s the spot with the speeding camera and I was at 80 with a speed limit of 60. However, I didn’t notice a flash although it was already dark. Makes me wonder, are those cameras actually operational? Anybody every got a fine from it?

  1. The speed cameras are normally set for 60 over. I’ve yet to set one off going less than 140.

20 over is nothing, you have zero to worry about.

  2. They have a high threshold over the speed limit. I’ve heard as high as +40km/h but I think it just depends.

I’ve never really thought about them with my x+20 system I normally use.

The only speeding ticket I’ve received was for +21 and the cop followed me and the car ahead for about 10 km and waited for us to drift over +20 km/h before lighting me up.

My only annoyance was he only pulled me over and not the guy ahead who I was following and matching speed with.

  3. There are crazy’s pushing 120 on the Tomei.
I only see cops when there’s an accident.
Makes me wonder if there’re for show as well…

  4. Hanshin Expressway in Osaka is usually 30 over, but depends on which route. Tomei, Meihan, etc are 40 over and they usually are pretty obvious when they go off

  5. Not endorsing it, but it seems to be standard practice for many drivers to go 80 in a 60, 60 in a 40, 100 in an 80, etc. I think the thresholds for penalties must be pretty high.
