Seeking Recommendations for Shukubo, Sendai and Tokyo Day Trips

Hello everybody,

I am planning a 33 day solo trip for 12 December – 13 January. I was looking for recommendations specifically for the following:

1. Buddhist temples for 5 days of Shukubo. I am religious and I intend for this part of the trip to be a pilgrimage. I am looking for temples with tranquil scenery, somewhere to meditate and something a bit more traditional/less touristy. Preferably this part of the trip will occur right after Sendai so something in the northern regions of Japan is preferable for convenience/logistics reasons but open to suggestions. The place I have in mind so far is Dewasanzan-jinja Shrine although it does look like a hassle to access.
2. Sightseeing locations for 4 days in Sendai. I am particularly looking for recommendations on locations that will showcase the history of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami as I have a strong interest in this event. I am also looking for general recommendations on places/things to do in Sendai including day trips to nearby locations.
3. Day trips out of Tokyo for the 24 days I am there. My interests are sightseeing and onsen. In the past I have already experienced Hakone and Kawaguchiko which I will be revisiting this time as well.

Thankyou in advance.
