From what I can see this isn’t against the rules to ask this but I’ll delete if it is.
In this sentence 事件の背景に何があったのだろう I don’t really understand the あった before the だろう, what’s its purpose in the sentence? The translation I was given on the flashcard was” I wonder what was behind the incident” and not too sure what the あった is actually doing.
