Rakuten vs. Docomo credit card?

I wanted people’s opinions on which one they think is best. I want to apply for a credit card soon cause I also want to switch up my phone plan as well. I’ve been leaning more toward Rakuten but it seems like Docomo is the more popular brand. I would like to know about people’s experiences with dealing with either. Thank you!

  1. Rakuten is the easier one to get from what I’ve heard. I like the points and I use a lot of rakuten services so it works for me. I actually don’t know anyone who has a docomo card so I can’t give insight on that.

  2. docomo card will give you discount for phone bill (if not using mvno), accrue d points at 1% rate, and has iD contactless payment. The last point alone would make me choose dcard over rakuten.

however most foreigners here are usually in the “I’ll take what i can get” group so you’re more likely to be accepted for rakuten.

  3. D Card Gold 4lyfe

10% back on Docomo bill, points everywhere, plus every year if you hit a certain threshold, you get 22,000 yen in store credit for a new phone, fashion store, Mercari, etc.

  4. I use Rakuten and can pay my entire phone bill just from points obtained using Rakuten Card. There’s a reason why Rakuten Card is the most used in Japan.

  5. I only use Rakuten Credit Card and I can use their points for many things – Toho Cinemas, McDonalds, Rakuten Market etc.

  6. I have both and in terms of spending vs points accrued, Docomo wins hands down. The cost is a bit hefty at 10,000 yen per year, but anything you get after ¥833 is just free money.

I average around 6000-7000 points per month.

The only thing you need to consider is where to spend the points. You need to find a shop that is useful for you m, that accepts D-Barai or Docomo points. In my case it’s Yamaya. So that’s 5 to 6000 yen of alcohol/olives/cold cuts/pasta etc for free every month.
