Tips for 3 days in Kyoto with kids

I am currently in Tokyo, quite overwhelmed by travel. Tomorrow we are moving to Kyoto where we will have 3 full days (4 nights) to explore with kids.

I know one day we will do the Nara trip (should we add inari shrine on the same day, or is it too much?)

One day I want to do a historical trip – visit old temples, etc.

Any ideas for third day activities with kids? Age 8-12

Also which day of week is best for Nara or the temples? We will have Thursday to Saturday.
