Is a masters in GIS in Japan with MEXT a good idea?

Hi!

I’m studying computer science right now in Canada, and am interested in getting into geospacial information systems/science potentially (a mouthful lol) for my masters.

I’m not doing any study abroad during my bachelors in the hopes of not delaying my grad date, and being able to do internships during the summer.

However, I’m really interested in going abroad for grad school, and I feel like GIS could be applied in Japan in relation to natural disasters.

Assuming I’m lucky enough to get the MEXT scholarship, would you recommend doing my masters there, considering I already have a comp sci bachelors under my belt?

Sorry if this question seems kind of general or has been already asked – I was curious about it in relation to my interest of study.

  1. GIS is a pretty hot field worldwide. There’s a lot of possibilities available if you end up taking that Master’s.

It definitely *can*, but unfortunately (probably) not by you.

Pretty much all of the disaster planning/relief in Japan is handled by the government as civil service positions, which means they will be restricted to citizens.

You can definitely get a GIS job in Japan, just not anything government-related.

  2. Don’t listen to gatekeepers, it’s an awesome Idea. You might want to check Tohoku University programmes, I have attended there a conference dedicated on GIS in cases of disasters like earthquake.

I have studied at this university (as exchange student though), if you want more info DM me!
