Are there any big differences between working full time at a national university vs a private one?

1. I heard private ones give you more classes while national universities give you more time for research*. Also, there is a lot more prestigious national universities than private ones.

   EDIT:
   *I’m talking about faculty, not lecturers. Part time lecturers are paid by the class and full time lecturers get a full load of classes with no extra time for research.

2. You get paid more at (some) private unis.

3. These comments are based off of my experience and what I’ve heard. I worked at a prefectural university for a while and now I work at a private university, both times as a contract lecturer. None of this is the word of God which has been chiseled into stone.

   National universities tend to be more prestigious than private universities. There are for sure prestigious unis, like the 関関同立 schools in Kansai.

   Connected with the above – it’s said that students at national universities get in through their talent and aptitude while (*in some cases*) students at private universities can get in with a significant parental donation to the school even if they’re poor students.

   Private universities pay better.

   Facilities at private schools are better.
