Hello! I’m an international student from the US interested in the Electrical Engineering + Computer Science Program at Kyushu University… Any chance anyone can scan my resume and see if I have a good chance?
GPA: UW 4.0/W 4.35(Valedictorian)
SAT: 1370 (1390 superscore); 720 Math/670 E/W
ACT: 26 (Retaking next week, hopefully to be in the 30’s)
AP: APUSH, AP Calc AB, AP Physics 1, AP Computer Science A (These are the only ones available at my school, although I had to take computer science online, all other courses were taken at the honors level, however all are being taken this year so I do not have scores to report)
Dual Enrollment: EC1101(Research-based writing) & EC1141(Literature based writing)
Extra Curriculars:
Varsity Swim Team Captain (5 years)
Varsity Track (3 years)
Assistant Manager at restaurant (I basically lead closing shifts, and if a manager is away, I am in charge of the store, and stuff like that)
Spotlight Director for 2 school productions
I lead a middle school guy’s bible study
I have 150 volunteer hours currently
Research Project:
JREX(Junior Research Exhibition):
This is where you choose a controversial topic, research the topic in the first 9 weeks, write a 15-page during the second 9 weeks, and finally present it in front of a full audience and experts on the topic who will then ask you questions. I also had to conduct interviews with experts during the research phase.
Leadership Program:
Unique to my school, basically a leadership program that is embedded into the curriculum, with several different leadership events designed to train and test your teamwork capabilities, how to lead under pressure, and how to use these leadership skills in everyday life. Those who prove themselves of being great leaders by being nominated, and completing 3 different phases of training are named “Senio rLeader”, which aids in mentoring the underclassmen and teaching them leadership skills (I am a Senior Leader)
I think that’s about it, thank you!

Without doxing my self too much, I have knowledge about the admissions process. Although, I am probably not allowed to give information that isn’t public, so I won’t.
First, there are two programs. One is the normal admissions, where you would apply with Japanese natives and foreigners who are fluent in Japanese. The second is the IUPE program, which is taught in English. They both have very drastic differences in entrance exam and admissions.
The normal admissions is typical of any Japanese university. Basically, you take an in person entrance exam on a variety of topics. Your acceptance depends on your score on the entrance exam. You need to be fluent in Japanese though.
The IUPE program, has a separate admissions procedure with a separate application, deadlines, and entrance exam. Entrance into the IUPE program is more like American universities. There are multiple rounds. The first round is a paper round where your scores on tests matter, the second round is based on what you wrote in the applications (the long answer questions), and the third round is an interview/entrance exam test. For the paper round, your SAT scores are a bit low for what I’ve seen. For the second round you have tons of extracurricular activities that you could write about, but unlike American schools, unless it’s relevant, it’s not so important. For the interview, it depends on your knowledge in the field. I’ve seen people get all the way to the end but get totally stumped on the questions.
Besides admission, one huge difference is the number of people who get accepted. Normal admissions accept (probably) hundreds of students. The IUPE program only accepts a handful of students. Of course more people apply to the regular admissions, but even if your CV is impressive, there is a high chance you will get rejected. I recommend applying to many universities in Japan at the same time.
