Moving back to Canada — many shipping questions!

Hi,

I’m thinking about returning to Canada. I will probably throw out or give away most things, but I’m looking for concrete ideas for shipping stuff back. Do I get some large rubbermaid tubs (I know those are expensive, too) and just send them surface mail? What are the maximum dimensions for shipping this way? Can you recommend a good shipping container, preferably something I can get from Amazon? Is it worth it to ship an iMac, speakers, things of similar size and value? Any suggestions for more valuable things? I have some synthesizers and music equipment that I will want insured and treated very carefully. Any advice for these things?

A lot of questions at once. I would appreciate tips, the simpler and cheaper the better.

Thanks.

  1. Anything you send sea mail you won’t see for up to three months, but it’s nice and cheap. Why containers? Just buy the large cardboard box from the post office and fill it up. If you use a supermarket box I found the post office staff didn’t like that because of quarantine, the box might have had fruit in it in a previous life. So it’s just easier to buy the box they sell. You also can’t go over dimensions that way. I don’t know anything about insurance for expensive items though. I have shipped a lot of crap via sea mail but never anything really valuable.
