Electric Bicycle

Where is a good online website to purchase an electric bike? More specifically I want a bike that isnt one of the 50 million that people ride everyday. Not after the ones with the basket on the front. More interested in a mountain / off road bike that is also electric. I know of MERCARI JAPAN. Are there any other sites that people have used successfully?

  1. Go to a Yodobashi Camera/Bic Camera, check out the bike you want, test it out, then buy it there in store or find it on cyma ([https://cyclemarket.jp/](https://cyclemarket.jp/)) or Asahi, etc.

Don’t buy an expensive bike from random online sellers unless they have good reviews on their Amazon/Rakuten shop.

  2. IMO, the main risk of these bicycles is the battery. If you search (ebike fire), you’ll see news in various countries, where there have been a number of bicycle battery fires that have burnt down entire apartments while charging. There have also been incidents of batteries spontaneously combusting – and in a number of cases, within an enclosed space (eg: an elevator) with fatal results.

In light of battery safety, I’d stick with one of the major 3 locally produced brands. Yamaha, Panasonic, or Bridgestone (who I’ve heard sources from Panasonic).

Any big box retailer will have a catalog, and can usually order a bike from it for you if they don’t have it in stock.

  3. I got my electric bicycle from Amazon. I’d also recommend your local home center or electronics store.

  4. Y’s road has a big selection of bicycles online and they have large stocks in their stores as well. They do sales every once in a while, be on the look out!

  5. Cause of the laws here not sure how popular a mountain bike version would be. You can only have it assist and not propel itself, I think the assist cuts at 25kmh as well

  6. Sorry this is completely off topic, as you’ve probably done enough research to decide on e-bikes, but does it really need to be electric? You can get a decent road bike or cross bike starting from 60k yen, and I can tell you it’s night and day compared to what you can get in home centers. It’s super lightweight (11kg-ish), and I can effortlessly ride whole day while carrying my whole camera gig.

Also, I highly suggest against Mercari. I know an e-bike is expensive, but there’s zero guarantee that you wouldn’t get scammed with a faulty bike at only slightly lower price. I’ve seen too many stories of people getting into trouble, and I just stay away from Mercari as a whole.

  7. If you don’t mind used, I recently purchased an electric assist bike from buychari. I found the bike on their website and saw that I could go view it in person since it was at a local shop, so I went to see it and ended up buying. I thought it was a pretty good deal in that it was a 2021 model, almost new but was about 30% off MSRP.
