Successful self-sponsoring visa holders, how many years?

That’s my question, pretty much. I’m closing in on my ten years residency, so I want to apply for PR in a couple years. That requires currently holding a three year visa. I’ve gotten three of those already through working full time with one company. I wonder how likely I am to get one if I work with numerous companies and sponsor myself. Anyone who managed to self-sponsor a visa, how many years did you end up with?

  1. I had a 5 years visa when I was a shain. During that time I started freelancing and only got 1 year when renewal was up. Then 3 years.
Visa durations seem pretty random anyway, but I think changing employers (including turning freelance) makes immigration initially a little suspicious and can temporarily give you shorter visas.
But again, immigration is random so you never know.

  2. I did not use myself as a sponsor – I am not even sure if that’s still possible – but both of my multi-job renewals were 3 years. To be fair, I think already having a decent work history before then helped to a degree.

Both renewals were with a mix of English teaching and freelance translation, but on my 2nd renewal I had *far* more freelance translation work (60-70% of my income most months) and I still got 3 years.
