What are some good locations for a two or three day trip in Japan?

Maybe this isn’t the place to post it, if not please forgive me.

So it’s summer vacation and I want to go somewhere for two or three days on a solo trip. I live in Saitama and I don’t really mind where I go! I like hiking, trying new food and just enjoying nice scenery.

I have already been to Hakone, Kamakura so other than that I’m good.

Many thanks!

  1. I went on a solo trip to Yamaguchi that I really liked but given the recent monkey attacks not sure I can recommend it!

  2. Kanazawa / Kaga is quite nice, Karuizawa also nice this season, and Kawaguchiko quite scenic and relaxing if you stay at a good place

  3. Just got back from three day trip hiking and onsen-ing on Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture. Great food—Toyama shiro-ebi and smoked takuan—and gorgeous chilly mountain views and lots of light hiking. Get there by train and bus and cable car and ropeway up mountain! Fun to hang out up and down the lovely rainbow mist of the Kurobe Dam. A great trip well recommended.

  4. Izu Oshima or Niijima + neighboring Shikinejima are awesome if you like islands, volcanos, light hiking, nice scenery, swimming, and onsen.

  5. Izu is nice, and checks a lot of the boxes that you listed.

My dream getaway is Chichijima, but those trips are longer than 3 days.

  6. Ishigakijima, Okinawa. Awesome place, avoid holiday periods as it will be expensive

  7. Inawashiro in Bandai, Fukushima. Beautiful lake with swimming and boating options if you’re into camping. If not, Aizu Wakamatsu (also in Fukushima) is nice—a castle, a preserved Edo era post town, onsen, a train station staffed by cats, it’s great.
