Weekly Japan Travel and Tourism Discussion Thread – October 13, 2022

## Travel and Entry Updates

* On October 11, 2022, Japan resumed visa-free travel for [ordinary passport holders of 68 countries](https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/index.html) (countries listed [here](https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/short/novisa.html)).
* If you are a passport holder of a country **not** on the visa exemption list, you will still need to apply for a visa. All requirements are listed [on the official website](https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/index.html).
* Tourists will need to be vaccinated three times with an [approved vaccine](https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/covid-19/border_vaccine.html) or submit a negative COVID-19 test result ahead of their trip.

**For more detailed information about entry requirements and COVID procedures, please see our [monthly megathread/FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravel/comments/xsny8j/japan_travel_covid19_and_you_tourism_information/).**

  1. Q: Can I talk loudly with my friends on the train, while hundreds of people around me are silently dreading life on their daily morning commute?
    A: Please no…

  2. Advice: fill out the mysos app well ahead of time and save yourself a headache an an extra hour after a long flight.

Went through Haneda yesterday evening. I filled out the mysos application a couple days before but it was still red.

If it’s blue, you pretty much go straight to immigration. If it’s red, they march you to the opposite side of the airport to fill out a web application where you then present your received QR code to an agent, and they check your vaccine card. Then you have to walk all the way back with a green verification paper. By that time, the lines are jammed

  3. I might get flack for asking this question, and obvi no one has a crystal ball, but is it a safe bet that flights will only increase in price for the foreseeable future? I’m traveling in the spring from the US and should probably get my ticket soon.

  4. I’m wondering, I’m going to start working a job next year prob around February when I start applying for jobs.

Would it be too long to stay in Japan for 51 days? Or should I do just something like 21 days?

What’re are some notable cities to stay in (with duration)? I’m going to start researching a lot tonight but just want some places to start as a base of research. I’m looking at Kyoto and Tokyo.

Also any cool cities for photography?

  5. Shinkansen around New Year’s — I know it’s generally busy, but wanted to get thoughts as I create an itinerary —

Wife and I have the option of being in Tokyo Dec 27-31, or leaving Tokyo early to make a few stops —

    1. Any concerns about leaving Tokyo on Dec 31 to go to Kyoto? From what I’ve read, seems like most of the travel will be occurring before and after New Year’s Eve/Day?
    2. Also considering a more ambitious option of Tokyo to Kusatsu (Dec 29), Kusatsu to Kanazawa (Dec 30), Kanazawa to Kyoto (Dec 31)…or just do Tokyo to Kanazawa (Dec 30) and then Kanazawa to Kyoto (Dec 31). Am I setting myself up to get stuck with these multi-city stops? I plan to make Shinkansen reservations when I’m able to, but curious if anyone would advise against these options.

In both options, plan is to go Kyoto to Tokyo on Jan 5. We’ll be in Tokyo for a few more days (Jan 5-10), so there’s opportunity to make one of those nights a trip to Kusatsu, so at this point, really just debating cutting out Kanazawa based on how busy the holiday travels will be.

  6. Does anyone know if the Nakagin Capsule Tower definitely fully demolished? I’m hoping to catch a glimpse of it still mid demolition.
Do you know if there are other similar brutalist structures to check out in Tokyo?

  7. Hi I know this is a long shot but, I am visiting Japan in a few weeks and would like to know, how to visit a live V.league game. And if there are tickets for sale for the games or free admission. My friend is a fan of the JTEKT Stings and wants to go watch them live.

  8. 2 Questions:

    1. I heard the Miyajima torii gate is under construction until December. Does anyone know the completion status so far and will they be done by mid-December or not to count on it being done this year?
    2. I’ve been debating whether it’s worth travelling to Japan this December for 2-3 weeks. Cost of plane tickets notwithstanding (seeing as they’re getting too crazy right now), do you think I should go on this trip, especially as an obese guy (260lbs 5’10”)? I worry that being overweight will be less pleasant for walking around a lot and sweating (and my IBS might be an issue). My alternative is to wait until October 2023, which I feel would be safer but it’s a year away and I wonder if tourism will be busy once again. Should I go to Japan this December?

  9. Not sure if this is the best place to ask but, what’s the best way to ship back a lot of packages? I plan on buying a lot of gifts and I know my 2 bags won’t be enought. To US.
