Is Japanese language school worth it?

I am 21 and hafu (British/Japanese) and recently moved to Japan after living in the UK all my life. I’ve spent the past few months travelling, but now my family are considering putting me in language school. However, I’m still unsure if it’s the best choice for me (The final decision is mine)

In terms of my Japanese, it’s not great. My strongest point is understanding Japanese, I can’t understand every sentence but can follow a conversation. I’ve fluently mastered reading/writing Hiragana and am currently studying Katakana and soon Kanji. My weakest point is speaking. It’s mainly to do with confidence, as I’m worried about saying the wrong thing. I do sometimes know what to say, but prefer to just keep quiet.

I’m currently staying with my family in Tottori Prefecture, but am currently living in the city searching for schools. My parents will be the ones paying for the school, but I don’t want them to waste it if I end up either hating it or not getting a good experience.

My mom thinks it’s a good idea, but others have said it’s a waste of money (coming from Japanese people) so I’m conflicted.

To anyone living in Japan, did you bother with language school – did you regret it or not? I’m leaning towards not going, but would like any advice. Thanks 🙂
