Semi-new to Japanese and looking for a study partner

Hi everyone,

I have been learning Japanese since I was 10 by listening to Japanese music and watching anime and drama. Took some course in college also so I am not like100% fresh to Japanese but also not really very good at it.

Basically I know how to pronouse the hiragana and katagana and kanji (I am from Hong Kong so Kanji is never a problem for me to write at least).

Recently I want to pick up Japanese again but I don’t know where to start and I have depression and procrasitnation so I really hope I can find someone to go via the learning process together.

I can help you with anything you needed as long as I know them well, especially Kanji!

Feel free to send me a msg and talk together 🙂

  1. Both my younger sisters and I studied Japanese as kids, we learned hiragana and watched a lot of anime. We took Japanese classes in High school, but stopped studying after graduation. That was forever ago and I got back into studying seriously a couple years ago.

I think the biggest problem is that we are beginners, intermediate level content is too difficult, but beginner level content feels so monotonous. It’s difficult to know where to pick back up.

For me I focused really hard on Anki. Just grabbing a few vocabulary words from the N5 a day and grinding those. It was really boring at the start but got better as I started finding more words I didn’t already know. It really helped me focus on a path that felt like actual progression.

The older sister prefers textbooks. She collects quite a few of them, if it starts with a bunch of greetings she’ll skip that chapter and move on to the next one. She likes “Minna no Nihongo” but is currently working with “1000 Essential Vocabulary for the JLPT N5.”

The younger sister can’t quite focus on Anki or with textbooks. She will usually play games while listening to YouTube videos that list N5 vocabulary. She isn’t passively listening, but actively and has learned a few hundred words so far.

Good luck! I hope you find a path of study that works for you.
