what is the best method for cell coverage while travelling?

I’ll be in Japan for four weeks, staying
with my partner who lives there so I will have wifi at their home.

What’s the most cost efficient option for cell phone coverage? I’m considering using my cell company’s roaming service, but I’ve also heard of people buying new sim cards- I’ve never done that before and am not sure how it works yet.

Any advice/suggestions would be super helpful!!

  1. Get a travel sim for example from Sakura mobile. Get it sent to your partners house, put it in your phone, done.
Roaming will definitely be the least cost effective method.

  2. I have an unlocked cell phone that has a Google Fi sim card in it. I just turn it on for a month when a do extended international travelling. It is pretty inexpensive (although I usually double check to make sure one month of service would be cheaper than just using my regular roaming service).

  3. It is pretty much a comparison game. For me roaming would cost a fortune, so I always go a travel SIM card with data only. I saw people mention that some US carrier have decent roaming cost so it is an option.
