I got this for a friend Im having some second thoughts. It’s her birthday and I went to a Japanese shop to get her a greeting card. The guy at the shop said it was common to get these for birthdays or weddings so I wanted to be sure nothing in the card wasn’t “wedding” related just in case.

2. My wife is Japanese, I double checked with her also. If the ties go up that is a congratulations for a wedding. _/

   They don’t usually go w those cards for birthday even though the kanji is just congratulations, it is the upwards knot that has more meaning.

   Is the person Japanese and would know this?

3. Those envelopes are usually used for gifts of cash at congratulatory life events (I’m pretty sure this one is specifically for weddings). I think using it for a birthday card would be pretty strange, but nobody would be offended. They’d probably just laugh it off as a cultural misunderstanding.
