Very specific question about getting married

Hi, I hold a Hong Kong passport and need my embassy/consulate to issue a certification that I am not currently married in my home country/other countries. Problem is, Hong Kong doesn’t have an embassy. Does anybody know if this is something that I should take to the Chinese embassy?

  1. Since you are going to register at the local city/ward office (and each city office has its own manuals for this), the way to make this go very smoothly is to go to the office and ask them directly what they expect. Or you call them and ask. Even though the procedure nationally is the same, the municipalities are what do a lot of the shuffling of the papers and have more or less experience handling cases with foreigners.

You can look up your city office phone number (usual strategy: google the name of the city 結婚 外国籍, you will find a website. That website will usually have a phone number at the bottom _and_ an email).

I would bet lots of money that you need to go to the Chinese embassy, though.

“Certificate of Absence of Marriage Record”

“Q 2 : I intend to get married in (a place other than Hong Kong) and I am asked to produce a certificate of absence of marriage record (“CAMR”). How and where can I apply for one?
To apply for a CAMR, you have to complete an application form (Form MR35) and pay the prescribed fee for a search of marriage record. You should bring along your Hong Kong identity card or valid travel document and submit your application in person to any of the marriage registries. You may also choose to submit your application by post. The duly completed application form, a photocopy of your Hong Kong identity card and your travel document bearing your personal data and signature should be sent to the Marriage Registration and Records Office, 3/F, Low Block, Queensway Government Offices, 66 Queensway, Hong Kong together with the prescribed fee for a search of marriage record. The signature on your application form must be the same as that on your travel document. If your travel document was issued in places outside Hong Kong, the photocopy of the travel document must be properly certified by a notary public.”
