When is it okay to use the suffix ~中 (ちゅう) while describing a continuing action?

I wonder if it can be used in only chinese origin words like in 練習中 or it can be applied to any kind of words like 歩く中? What are the limitations of this suffix and what can I use instead when it’s not possible to add 中at the end of a word?

  1. While you can’t say 歩く中, you can say things like 買い物中 or 夏休み中, so it’s possible.

Edit: I forgot the “continuing action” part, my bad. Ignore my comment.
