Learning Japanese as a beginner!

Hello everyone. Apart from learning Hiragana and Katakana at first, what else do you suggest for a beginner to learn basic conversational Japanese? I am studying at the university of Tsukuba and the online free classes for Japanese learning are full. So I am planning to learn on my own for now. Should I take a tutor?

My main motive is to learn conversational Japanese. I went out alone to the city centre today and I struggled a lot due to my lack of Japanese skills. It was really embarrassing to ask people around in English about everything since I am new. I couldn’t even navigate how to get on the bus and pay. Since I am planning to explore Tokyo soon, I don’t think so I am ready for a train ride yet.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. 🥹

  1. You might be able to find a tutor near you for in-person lessons

If you want to self-study you can read the sidebar —->

The most basic and plain path is

    Kana–>Textbook(s)–>Native media

“Native Media” is a clunky phrase but we mean, books in Japanese, movies, magazines or whatever it is you are into

If you can’t find a tutor near you try iTalki out
