Timing my application for permanent residency

So I arrived April of 2013, and am thinking of applying for PR as soon as I’m able to. I also began working that same month, though my employer at the time was unable to secure my humanities visa until June or so (I had to get my visa through related work experience, as I didn’t have a degree at that time – a weird route I know, and wasn’t that straightforward for my employer at that time).

As such, I am not sure whether to apply in April or in June (or if I could even try and apply earlier than the 10 year point). My tentative plan is to get PR and likely leave Japan early to mid 2024 (for at least a few years likely – yes I would need to apply for a re-entry permit through immigration I believe).

Thanks in advance.

Don’t fuck around with the 10-year rule – I have friends who were immensely qualified and failed in their first attempt b/c they were at 9 or 9.5 when they applied.

Smartest thing you can do is play it safe and wait until you’ve been on a work status for 10 years, which means June would be the better bet. Also, I assume by now you’re on a 3/5-year status and that you don’t have a renewal coming up anytime soon?

Bit of a dangerous game but as long as you get that reentry permit and don’t miss your return period you should be fine.

  2. I got my PR through the HSP route so ymmv, but it took 6 months after submission – do factor that in.
