Safety training courses?

I’ve just accepted an offer to babysit a four-year-old girl at her home one afternoon a week.

I’ve also just realized that I have no safety training under my belt whatsoever, not even basic first aid. I don’t think I’d be able to call the emergency services in Japanese. I’ve never taken part in a disaster drill.

Where do I start learning about these things? Borrow some books from the library? Go to the city office and ask?

  1. Your fire department will most likely offer some things in Japanese – maybe free, maybe paid. I’m a teacher so somebody arranges for them to come to us for CPR once a year, but it looks like my local one offers to the public as well. The city office might know of additional resources too.

  2. As the other reply said, your fire department should offer it. You can even get a certificate for passing a simple online test + hands-on training. The certificate is 普通救命講習修了証 and you can ask at city hall or at fire department when its offered. It was free for me, not sure if it would cost anything for your region. A quick google search says in tokyo there are some 3 hour classes offered which result in issue of that certificate for around 1200-1400 yen.
