Hello everyone. I’m a student in Kyoto and my significant other lives in Nagoya. I have taken the Shinkansen a few times but the cost is really adding up. Is there any other way like another JR line/a bus? Any suggestions are welcomed.

The bus is much cheaper. Also if memory serves it’s possible to take local trains. It’ll cost around 3500 and take 5-6 hours I believe.
Which stations? Kyoto – Nagoya is 6000¥ and takes 30 minutes apparently.
Shirasagi is 2 hours and 4400¥. I guess you save 3000 round trip, but lose 3 hours in transit.

By shinkansen ¥5,910. It takes 33 minutes.
By Special Rapid train via Maibara – ¥2,640. It takes 2 hours and 13 minutes.
By highway bus – ¥2,600. It takes 2 hours and 36 minutes.
I often use Willer Express (https://willerexpress.com/en/). Looks like they go Kyoto-Nagoya for 1500yen
