Hotel or Ryokan recommendations

Hi all,

My wife is about 4 months pregnant and before she becomes too tired in the next few months I want to take her to a ryokan or onsen hotel where there is either a private onsen in our room (I know they are usually expensive places) or somewhere that isn’t in the middle of a major city where there is no view of the mountains and its just busy.

I live in Hiroshima prefecture and so if anyone has any recommendations of a place or hotel name that is preferably South Japan that would be great. Or just a suggestion of something I can do with her that doesn’t involve too much travel or walking.

Thanks in advance

  1. Check out Dogo Onsen in the Matsuyama city. You can use a high speed ferry either from Hiroshima or Kure to go to Matsuyama port, then take the train to Dogo Onsen. It’s one of the oldest onsen in Japan and there are several ryokans that offer private bath.

  2. The Unzen Mikado Hotel (雲仙みかどホテル本館) south of Nagasaki and just outside of Shimabara City is excellent. They have a few rooms with private onsens and an excellent meal plan. There is also a community onsen for all the guests. It’s expensive but it’s a great place for a romantic weekend if you don’t mind forking over the yen.

  3. Be careful about onsen temperatures. Pregnant women shouldn’t bathe in water hotter than 37°C/99°F.

  4. There are many places in Kirishima, here in Kagoshima.

My ex and I spent a few nights [here](https://ama-teras.jp/) last winter. There was a private onsen connected to the room and we had free range of the other non-private onsen in the ryokan. Great view of Sakurajima in the bay and the stars at night were beautiful.

My only two complaints are: I requested no shellfish with our meals because she was allergic, but there was some shellfish in our first dinner. After we told them the first night they made sure to not include it. Also that the temperature of the onsen were absolutely scalding. She liked her onsen water much warmer than I did, but even she couldn’t get in the onsen at first. We had to slow the flow of the hot water and let the cold water run in for a good while before either of us could stand to even get in up to our knees. Other than those two things, it was a great place and really relaxing.
