What kind of fees should I expect using atms in Japan?

From my understanding I should be able to use my debit card (mastercard with a local bank in my area of the us) in 7/11 atms. According to my bank I should have 3 withdrawals a month without any fees from my bank account, but I’m trying to figure out how much atms will typically charge in fees?

  1. That would be a question for the card processor that your bank uses. Some cards have no international fees, others charge a fee around $1 or $2 USD most of the time. Call your local bank tomorrow morning and ask them about international fees.

  2. It’s 110 yen during business hours, and 220 yen outside business hours.

Sometimes there are no fees on foreign cards. I believe this is the case for 7/11.

  3. When your bank told you that you have 3 free withdrawals, did they understand it’s both an out of network and international withdrawal?

  4. For international withdrawal, 7/11 ATM charge 110yen for withdrawal up to 10,000 yen and 220yen for larger withdrawal (up to 100,000 yen per usage). There are no operational hour for international withdrawal.

Most other ATM that accept international charge 220 flat and only allow up to 50,000 yen per usage.

  5. Aeon Bank ATMs won’t charge you anything. Beyond that, if your bank says you have three free out-of-network withdrawals, then the only wildcard is if they charge an international transaction fee.

  6. Your bank may claim they don’t charge fees but will often give you the most dogshit exchange rate possible. Just be aware of this and consult /r/japanfinance for long-term solutions.

  7. Get a credit union account or an account that reimburses ATM fees. I’ve never had to pay an ATM fee, Japan account or American account, in six years.
