rakuten/rakuten mobile employees

I’ve read too many negative feedback about the company, but it’s from years ago. Has thing changes now? I’ve applied for one of the engineer position and still waiting to be approved. So I would like to know if there are positive changes now. Also do they have employee benefit like rent support etc? Thank you.

  1. I’ve worked at a Japanese startup, Rakuten and a gaishikei and Rakuten was…meh. Much better than the startup I worked at, but it was hard to be worse, and not nearly as good as the place in at now. Honestly it’s hard to say for sure what it will be like since there is so much variance between teams and little drive to unify the engineering culture.

TL;DR you could do worse especially in Japan

  2. If you are using it as a stepping stone to get into another company then you could try to tough it out for a couple of years. Otherwise I would recommend avoiding the ‘Cult of Miki’ if possible. I have hired multiple ex-Rakuten employees and it is still as bad as ever. Also if you are still waiting to be ‘approved’, it is a common tactic that they use to string you along until they tell you that there is a headcount freeze and that the position is no longer available.
