I searched for the name of the dumbo/flapjack octopus in japanese and I saw it and thought “oh, I get it, its 蛸󠄀（たこ）but with a dakuten on た bc it has two kanji”, and I also searched the name of the blue ring octopus, which now I know what it means in japanese, it means leopard print octopus 豹紋蛸󠄀 but I cant understand what 面 is supposed to represent

Flat, like in 平面
After Googling flapjack octopus for a bit, I learned that they got their English name from their ability to flatten themselves very thin like a pancake. So I’d assume it’s the same for Japanese and the 面 would be the “face/surface” meaning.
I looked up the origin of the name, and most theories mention being flat (from being out of water for example), some like a mask, as the reason for the name.
