Was there a backlog of CIRs in 2022?

I am looking at applying to be a CIR for 2023. I was previously interested after completing my MA in Translation Studies (Japanese) in 2020, but I could see the writing on the wall regarding the travel ban and put off. Have years of translation experience now though and am still interested. I kept up with what was going on with JET during that time and know there was some backlog with ALTs waiting a year or two to go, and wondered if anyone had similar insights for the CIR positions to see if I’d be wasting my time applying.

  1. CIR positions were affected by the travel ban just as much as ALT positions. But Japan is slowly opening up again and I suspect successful 2023 applicants will arrive in a normal fashion.

  2. There really isn’t much of a backlog anymore. It should be business as usual barring any unforeseen circumstances.

  3. I mean I applied as a CIR this year and am departing for Japan in August. I also don’t have any translation experience outside of class and just graduated with a bachelors so I don’t think there’s a backlog of candidates or anything like that.
