Update: Resigning and Bonus

So last week I asked a question about whether resigning affects my eligibility for the bonus in Dec and got a variety of answers, some say the moment you resign you become ineligible, some say as long as your last date is after the bonus date you’ll get it. I managed to get some answers from HR so just want to add another data point out there

I was told that *”The condition of bonus payment is that you are enrolled on the first day of the bonus payment month.”*

I’m not sure what “enrolled” means, does anyone know? The Japanese sentence in the bonus rulebook given to me is “賞与支給月の1日現在在籍する次の各号に掲げる者とする。”, so I can see how it is translated as “enrolled”, but honestly not sure what that means in this context – is it just synonymous with “employed”?

So if I make my last day of work after 1 Dec but use up my paid leave until that last day, am I still “enrolled” to get the bonus? At this point it’s far too sus for me to follow up on this question, since I hid it with like 5 other questions on bonus so HR don’t get suspicious 😅, but it’s well over 1m yen so I also don’t want to take any risks!

  1. You really need to start asking these questions to HR. None of us have a fucking clue what your company policies are.

  2. As I commented in your prior post it specifically depends on your company manual and your employment contract. Mine clearly states that I cannot be under resignation notice, but yours sounds like it is implying you just need to be employed at the time the payment is made.

At this point I would just ask HR for the exact meaning. You will be out of there in a couple of months anyway. As long as they are a reasonable company and not some tiny operation, they aren’t likely to mess with you. Either way you’ll be leaving so just schedule it and make it clear you want to make sure you get the bonus payment. You can say everything in a hypothetical way to leave it open. Like, “if I had to leave” or “If I wanted to ensure my payment”.

  3. >- is it just synonymous with “employed”?

Yes, and remember until it’s paid out your bonus is discretionary so even if you’re employed on the first day of the month if they know you’re leaving before the last day they can always say NO BONUS FOR YOU!
