We will be going to Japan in early January 2023
Hesitant on the weather and mostly about renting a car and going to Kusatsu Onsen Town from Tokyo. Worried about snow for the drive and if renting a car will be a good idea. Trains are a lot longer and complicated, car would be simpler of course.
* Day 1 Arrive Tokyo in afternoon
* Day 2 Team Lab Planets Museum, Akihabara (Hesitant), Shibuya
* Day 3 Go to Yokohama cup noodle museum, open to suggestions…
* Day 4 Get a rental car and head out to Kusatsu onsen town
* Day 5 Kusatsu chill day
* Day 6 Drive back to Tokyo
* Day 7 Take train to Kyoto
* Day 8 Check out all the Temples
* Day 9 Potential day trip to Osaka castle and checking out the city
* Day 10 Train to Hiroshima
* Day 11 Check out WW2 Memorial and open to recommendations
* Day 12 Train to Tokyo – long train so not really planning this day
* Day 13 check out the Tokyo National Museum, Open to other things to do
* Day 14 Fly back home

How much time would driving save over a train? I ask because there is additional time involved in getting the car, returning, paperwork, etc. The train will also save hassle from driving in the snow (potentially) on mountain roads and on the left side, depending on where you are used to.
Unless you are planning to make driving daytrips while you’re at Kusatsu onsen – which you may not, if you’re just there for a relaxing stay – it’s likely less stressful to take the train.
