Cockroaches

Today one of my worst fears was realized.

Came home to find a giant cockroach on my wall.

Are the chances that that was the only one really that slim?… Trying to keep my hopeful thinking

  1. Roaches are fairly common. I’ve heard they live in the sewers (which are abundant in tokyo).

if its the only one youve seen in 2 years or something, you might not see one again in a while. I havent had one in every apartment ive lived in, but when i did it was always multiple times. Get some roach spray from the drug store and keep it handy. One time as i sprayed one it did this crazy dance and i immediately started singing la cucaracha in my head and laughed out loud like a crazy person.

  2. Are you sure it wasn’t a kamemushi?

Have you opened the windows recently? Do you have a portable aircon unit with a tube exhaust that you retracted, but didn’t check the innards before doing so?

If you have done neither, you may have a war on your hands.

  3. chances are non existant.

Block up any entry ways they may have. Keep your place free of food crumbs, keep trash with nama gomi airtight or outside. Wipe up your sinks and bathroom after using, they come to drink.

Then spray the edges of your room, around sinks and bath and along doorways to outside with peppermint oil ハッカ油 in a spray bottle.

My partner (zoologist) doesn’t like the roach killer with poison, because the bait will ironically call them in more.

  4. Was it a big black chonker or a slim brown boi? The black ones are outdoor types that took a wrong turn at Albuquerque and aren’t a huge problem. The slimmer brown ones are the disgusting roommates that will ruin your day.

  5. I got one last weekend in the washroom. It was the first one this year. To be honest it’s usually been a one off when I’ve seen one.

  6. If you’ve seen one and it’s massive you likely have a nest somewhere near you. I know it’s annoying and probably causing you some anxiety. Go to the grocery store and buy 2 6-packs of roach traps. I went with Combat (コンバット). Place them in the corners of your apartment, near your front entrance, and one or two outside your front door. Give it 2-days and I bet that the last you see of them for a while. These traps are poison that is delayed so the roach goes back to the nest and kills all the other roach friends.

Try this first and if they are still around go on to other solutions. I’ve had them twice, once in both my new apartments. I also moved to Singapore and had them. I did this 3-times and I never saw another roach any of the 3-times after 2-days.

  7. Big ones come from outside, generally. Little baby roaches were born inside. Think you’re OK.
