Recycle shops washing machine prices

I’m going to be a JET ALT in Iwate in a few days. The person before me wants to leave me a 100% working washer for free, but it is 15-20 years old and a little beat up.

Should I just say yes because it works and it’s free? Or should I say no because it’s so old and could potentially break any point and will be annoying to recycle?

What can I expect to pay for a 3-8 year old washer at a recycle shop?

Edit: based on all the responses below, I’ll definitely be keeping it. Thanks everyone! …now I’m just going to be wondering if washing machines have gotten efficient enough in the interim to warrant the savings in price for water/electricity/soap.

  1. If it breaks, they’ll usually take away the old one when you have your new one delivered. I’d keep it for now. In my area, used washing machines at 2nd Street start at around 25,000 yen, but they don’t always have a great selection.

  2. As long as it`s not those crappy old machines you have to put the clothes in the other side to rinse ..those are worthless

  3. No reason to throw out a washer that’s working. When I moved here my wife and I got an old fridge and washing machine from her little sister, and two and a half years later those are still working perfectly fine.

Keep it. Used washing machines go for 20k and up. Never seen one below that, in fact.

  4. Washing machines should last pretty long. It is essentially a motor and some water hoses. I got a 7 year old one and used it for about 8 years and it was still working when I tossed it. Well it had one malfunction where the lid didn’t make a good contact with the close sensor switch and wouldn’t start but I fixed it by jamming a chopstick in the hole where the switch was.

  5. Worst case scenario it breaks and then you get it taken away for free (or very little, 1000 yen maybe) when you end up having to buy a new one.

You can put the money saved toward something else since getting setup in a new home is always pretty much cash intensive. Lots of stuff to buy and a washing machine can eat up a lot of those funds.

  6. I would just keep what you have for now. It’s free and works /shrug

I rented a washing machine because my apartment was unfurnished lol. If yours ever did break you can consider renting appliances. IMO this is better if you plan on being a short-term resident.

  7. I too used an old one at first and it worked well. make sure to clean up the filters though including the water filter which overtime can accumulate dirt and slows down water flow. you can also buy almost new from outlet stores. they aren’t that expensive and you can get new model.

  8. maybe it’s not actually working well, but the guy doesn’t wanna throw it away? it is a little but of a pain to do

anything is possible, but i hope it works for you

  9. Sure keep it if it is working but100% get some of the washing machine cleaning powder stuff. You put it in and run a full cycle, will clean out all the mold and I’m guessing such an old machine could do with a clean
