Exchange Program Help!

Hi all! I’m going to Japan for the 2023-2024 academic year, and I’m having a lot of trouble choosing a university.

My three choices are Waseda Univesity, Rikkyo University, and Tsukuba University. For background information, my main goal is to learn the language and have good academics. My current majors are Japanese and Education, so learning the language is my main goal and if I could take extra classes taught in English about teaching that’d be awesome too!

Things I’ve heard so far:

Waseda University: Very prestigious but not academically challenging. Will have to mostly self-study for Japanese language courses, and the school is also huge. But it’s right in Tokyo.
Tsukuba University: Average language program and usually better for STEM majors. They do have one or two english courses for those interested in education, but I’ve heard these are sometimes not offered. Also two hours from Tokyo, so may not visit as often. But this might be better so I focus on academics. Plus, I like the size of this school better.
Rikkyo University: I haven’t been able to find many reviews on this school. But it is in Tokyo and has a good class size.

Any pros, cons, or information would be incredibly helpful!! Thank you!

  1. tsukuba is a good STEM school but u have to live in Ibaraki (ewww).

Waseda is the highest overall ranked but I wouldn’t worry about academics for foreigners if it’s just an exchange program.

I might have heard of Rikkyo but I have no idea where it is or what they specialize in. It doesn’t sound like it is in the same tier as tsukuba or waseda.
