Online degree and teaching in Japan

Hello, I’m trying to find more information about teaching in Japan but having a 100% online degree. I have don’t some research but I’m coming up empty handed when researching the University of the People and if it’s acceptable for Japan. I currently teach out here but my husband does not have a degree and really would like to get one. We don’t have a lot of money to do an expensive university so we want to see if anyone has heard anything good about this school?

  1. I’ve never heard anything good or bad about that school. For the most part, at least for standard English jobs in Japan, the degree doesn’t matter. It’s just a checkbox and a requirement of immigration. It MAY start to matter if he wants to get beyond the low pay ALT/eikaiwa industry, and would matter more and more with the higher prestige of the position. But, even then, it’s not like the majority of Japanese know anything about what is and isn’t a good university, and so long as the diploma itself doesn’t say “ONLINE BACHELOR’S DEGREE” (and they almost never do), it shouldn’t matter.

  2. If you’re just wanting to be an ALT or ekaiwa teacher then you are fine. As long as it is an accredited school that you can produce transcripts and a physical degree you can get jobs.

  3. Degrees do not say “this was online” or “this was in person.” All that matters is that the university is established and accredited by at least one of several legitimate accrediting agencies.

University of the People is nationally accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC). The university is also approved by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education, a regulatory body for student and consumer protection.

  4. as long as it’s regionally accredited don’t feel bad about online at all. A lot of people that have done the same school that I have said it’s actually harder than normal college. You just miss out on the networking and social aspects.

From my exp in brick and mortor a semester went like 1 sourced paper a class, 5 tests, read if you feel like it, the exam at the end, and a lot of classroom discussion and lecturing. The online stuff omg, it was like a research paper and two 1000 word discussion posts everyweek, a super paper exam at the end, about 30 pages of reading every week, more reading for research stuff, and you’re rewarded with only having to take one little quiz a class hehe. The plus side is i hardly had any dept coming out of there, if biden forgives 12k student load dept, i’d done my BA for free 🙂
